Welcome to Chinese with Mabel, your next bookmarked website for learning Chinese. Here you'll find simple stories in Chinese that are great for beginner/intermediate students as well as and fun explanational videos. And, I've got a step-by-step course in the making.
That picture you see is me eating some banana leaf-wrapped "juane" in the Peruvian Amazon (a traditional meal that's good and cheap!). You can tell I liked it!
I'm Mabel, the person behind this website and hopefully your next Chinese teacher if this is your first time on my site.
I've been teaching Chinese as I travel since 2019, but actually started out teaching in-person much earlier, back in 2014.
My Teaching Journey
I always wanted to travel the world, ever since I was young. Then, in 2014 I got the chance to au-per in Belgium for a family with two kids. During this time I helped teach them Chinese. Then, after Belgium I flew to the US and stayed with another family, also au-pering and teaching their two kids. And after the US came Mexico. Here I did the same thing. Again... with two kids.
During my time in Mexico, the family I was working for in the US still wanted me to continue teaching their kids , so at this point I started giving Zoom lessons to them, and after some time I was just traveling and teaching online.
During this time, I've been able to take a boat ride to the Amazon jungle in Peru...
... where I weaved a hand-fan and used (or tried to) a machete...
*The coconuts were amazing here... and so cheap (~25 cents was the cheapest I found)...
I've been able to explore some ancient ruins in different locations...

It was almost Christmas time!

And, the greatest part of all is that, whether I'm eating some really good tacos in Mexico...
... or petting a friendly llama in Peru...
... I always try to find a good internet connection and some time to be able to teach Chinese.
My Language Journey & Why I Created This Website
I'm not a big fan of sitting down with a big book and studying a language. During my travels, I've learned (some) French and Spanish in addition to English.
But, most of what I've learned has been through conversation with locals and other fun ways, like watching TV shows.
This is how I've learned and this is also more how I like to teach. Of course, I know grammar is important and I cover this too, but I try to focus on a more fun, conversational style of teaching.
I've created this website to put everything I create in one place, which hopefully will provide you with a fun and less-boring way to learn Chinese.
With my Simple Stories in Chinese podcasts I hope you can learn some simple vocabulary while listening to simple stories, and enjoy it all at the same time. And with my videos I hope to give you another fun way to learn with a little more teaching/explanation rather than just story telling.
